Matt Shakman Confirms More Monsters Are Coming To Godzilla Apple TV Plus Series

Legendary Entertainment is very well known in keeping their Monsterverse projects radio silent, especially when asked about them. However, we are expecting at least one of their upcoming projects, the untitled Godzilla TV series for Apple TV+ under the working title "Hour Glass," to release this year. In a recent interview with comicbook.com, director Matt Shakman has revealed there are other monsters appearing in the show.

In the last minute of the interview, Chris Killian from ComicBook asks Matt Shakman if we will see any monsters from Toho's roster that he was really eager to get his hands on. The director replies, "Well, Godzilla, first and for most…you know I still have my old Toho Godzilla toy with the arm that shoots off and the little tongue that comes out when you press the back of his head from when I was a kid and when I use to watch those movies with my dad and I absolutely loved them. So the chance to just film scenes where there are a bunch of people running down the street trying to escape from Godzilla…I mean, you absolutely got to check that off the bucket list. That's pretty awesome. So it was fine. We were creating a lot of cool Titans and monsters, some new, some old, and so it was fun and I'm excited."

Following the status quo, the director has kept his answer vague in this interview. However, we now know we will be seeing a number of monsters for Godzilla to encounter. Last time we had monsters from Toho Co. in the Monsterverse, they were Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Considering Ghidorah's skull was used in Godzilla vs Kong, it is safe to assume Legendary still has the rights to use their likenesses. So it might be possible we may hear about those three in the show since they were around the time of 2014. All of them were discovered by Monarch before the events in 2014.

As for seeing more Toho monsters, I don't think we will see monsters like Anguirus, Gigan, Biollante, etc. There have been a lot of demand for these monsters to appear in the Monsterverse in some medium. While a lot of them make sense, it would be best to be saved for a movie rather than being wasted in a TV show where not many of the general audience people would discover these monsters. Well, maybe Ebirah could be used for this show as fodder, but that's about it.

Male MUTO and Female MUTO in Godzilla (2014)

"Old" could also refer to all of the other monsters we have seen in the Monsterverse movies like Behemoth, Scylla, Methuselah, and the MUTOs. Since the MUTOs were Godzilla's enemies in the 2014 movie it would make the most sense for them to reappear in this show. Legendary Entertainment has a whole mythology team that works out the details for all of these monsters in all of the movies, tv shows, and comics. They research names of saints, demons, gods, and monsters from religion and mythology and try to find ways to design them in a way that fits into expanding universe. So the team are more than likely seeking to utilize these monsters they have already designed for previous movies and put them into use in larger roles.
