For quite some time, we have been going with "Godzilla And Kong" as the official title for the fifth movie in the Monsterverse. This was due to some leaked merchandise for the production crew and it had that title printed on the merch. Today, we got an unexpected teaser and official title for the film: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
The teaser begins what looks to be a humanoid monster similar to Kong sitting on a throne as piles of bones lay in front of him. This monster we can assume will be the main antagonist of the film (sorry Space Godzilla fans. Maybe next movie). Then the camera pans away from the sitting titan to reveal skulls of Godzilla and Kong emitting a blue and orange light from the crevices of the skulls. We hear Godzilla's and Kong's roars as the title card is displayed and the next thing we see is a close up on the eyes of either Kong or the monster that looks like Kong. Then, the teaser ends with the 2024 release date.
Other than the reveal of the movie's title and Space Godzilla being deconfirmed, there is not much we can dissect. We can assume the eyes we see at the end of the teaser belongs to the Titan that looks closely related to Kong since Kong's eyes are brown. Plus, the synopsis for the film suggests an ancient threat in the Hollow Earth awakens and hunts down Godzilla and Kong. Again, if we are to assume this new..."Emperor Kong" (based on how this Titan sits on his throne acts like an emperor) is the threat the synopsis suggests how will this Titan be any different from the Kong we know and love will be a huge mystery.
I do hope this is all we see until we are close to the end of 2023. This is considering that Godzilla x Kong is scheduled to release March 15, 2024 and we are still a little under a year away from release. To start the hype for the movie is way too soon and would be a mistake to start marketing the movie now just lose that hype by day of release much like Godzilla: King of the Monsters. If you really want me to get excited how about the Godzilla show for Apple TV+? I wonder if we will be seeing that soon since the show is said to be connected with the movie. Only time will tell.
