Ghidorah's Brief Reveal Has Just Raised The Stakes In Latest "Godzilla Minus Zero" Trailer

Ever since the movie's first unveiling in 2025, there were a lot of speculation that another monster is going to appear in Godzilla Minus Zero. King Ghidorah was the most popular choice as director Takashi Yamazaki has worked with the character before when he worked on "Godzilla The Ride: Giant Monsters Ultimate Battle" in 2021 for the Seibuen amusement park. There were other classic candidates such as Hedorah (mentioned once in an interview with the director having interest in the character) and Anguirus. As teasers were released throughout 2026 there were settle clues that Ghidorah was going to appear. However, there were no absolute indications. The two teasers were heavily focused on capturing the movie's tone and bread crumbs on the story.
Now, with the first full trailer having released fans have the official confirmation of Ghidorah in the movie and his origin changes drastically.
Ghidorah's Brief Appearance
In the trailer, his appearance is not a visual one. The trailer is still hiding him and I do hope the next one keeps him hidden just to save his official reveal for when the movie arrives. His official reveal is when his chirps are heard at the end of the trailer.
Towards the end of the trailer, we see the ground being lifted into the air by an anti-gravitational force, planes dodging the rubble, all the while Kenji Noda (played by Hidetaka Yoshioka) saying, "Another moral boundary mankind shouldn't cross." More destruction erupts and Kanji Murakami (played by Min Tanaka) saying, "Don't worry." Then, we hear it. The classic chirps made my skin crawl as soon as I instantly recognized it. It was that moment everyone got their confirmation that Ghidorah was coming.
We see Noda with the new character, Ms. Aoyama, looking out to the distance mystified by something approaching them. All the while, we hear Murakami continuing his sentence, "this isn't Godzilla we are talking about." The trailer ends with Godzilla falling from the sky as if he was dropped sort of like in Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and then the title card.
There are other very brief moments where Ghidorah's "gravity beams" are seen in the background targeting a plane or just aimed at the ground. Yet, these shots happen very quickly. It is a definitely easy to miss. Considering this, it really adds to the fear factor that the gravity beams now have an effect on gravity when struck. Usually, they were always just beams of light that looked like lightning. Now, there is an after-effect that really adds to Ghidorah's chaos.
Ghidorah's Origin
Ever since Ghidorah's first appearance in Ghidorah, The Three Headed Monster in 1964, the monster has always had an extraterrestrial origin. Godzilla Minus One has revealed that this new version will have a very different origin story.
The trailer starts off with Noda being mesmerized by the destruction while saying, "We didn't finish the job like we thought." calling back to the civilian lead counterattack in Godzilla Minus One. Not believing Noda, Koichi Shikishima (played by Ryunosuke Kamiki) was convinced that Godzilla was blown to pieces. Thirteen seconds in the trailer, Murakami is seen holding a petri dish of a petrified Godzilla skin/dorsal sample. We see a meeting between the cast gathered in a circle probably discussing Godzilla's return. All the while, he smirks into the camera saying "Fighting fire with fire."
This here has me thinking this skin sample from Godzilla is where Ghidorah will come from. Murakami's plan to stop Godzilla may be to grow another Godzilla, but it turns into an even worse mutation. Which is why we hear Murakami at the end of the trailer saying, "Don't worry, this isn't Godzilla we are talking about," it is him realizing what he had unleashed and Godzilla is the least of their worries.
Ghidorah has had other unusual origin stories. Other depictions did change him to be a mutation from small alien creatures called Dorats and another depicted him to be an ancient deity that served to protect Japan. However, this one seems to be the most grounded version for the monster. Making Ghidorah a mutation rather than making him an extraterrestrial is interesting on how this will play out. Will Ghidorah first appear looking like another Godzilla and he evolves to Ghidorah to combat the original or will he appear as Ghidorah right out the gate?
Lastly, there is the new mission titled "Operation Narukami" that gets carried out by Noda. Narukami is a disambiguation of the names "Raijin" and "Raikou," which are names of the god of thunder in Shinto and Buddhist religions. Perhaps this is another hint of Ghidorah's involvement in the plan to stop Godzilla.
Other Notable Additions
There were a lot of other things in this trailer that are happening. Our first introduction to the newest character, Ms. Makoto Aoyama (played by Masami Nagasawa), is described a "forecasting prodigy."
Update: I originally speculated this character has psychic abilities to track down Godzilla or Ghidorah because of her label. In a new update, that is not the case. According to the official movie X page, she is a genius weather forecaster. She is on loan from the Meteorological Agency to the Large-Scale Countermeasures Office. That was why she was hovering over a map. Ms. Aoyama was scanning for possible patterns that may be linked to either Godzilla or Ghidorah. She is tracking the monsters.
We do get a grasp of what is happening with Noriko (played by Minami Hamabe). She hints that she is dying as she does tell Shikishima, "I don't think I have much time left." She even shows worry for both Shikishima and their adopted daughter, Akiko asking if something happened to him then what would happen to her. At the end of Godzilla Minus One, there was a black spot that appears on her neck. According to Yamazaki, he explained that was Godzilla's cells. With that information, there were speculations that she might have a connection to Godzilla in this movie. Maybe she will have a psychic link to Godzilla, but I am honestly thinking those cells are actually giving her cancer.

Lastly, we do see Godzilla looking charred up. In one shot, we see Godzilla roaring at possibly Ghidorah in the distance. He looks battered and bruised. There are even burn marks on him that suggest he got pummeled by a very heavy attack. What most likely happened is that he took on a barrage of Ghidorah's gravity beams and is roaring in defiance. It is just an awesome shot.
Overall, I am very excited to see the final product. I love Godzilla Minus One and I was already prepared for this movie after it was announced. This is looking to be my most favorite movie of 2026.
