Happy Godzilla Day to all of the fans out there! Today marks Godzilla's 71st anniversary. The 70th anniversary celebration is done and over with. We had been celebrating Godzilla's 70th for…two or three years now. And we got that remembrance of his celebration at this year's Godzilla-Fest.

Toho Co. marked November 2nd, 2025 as the last day of his 70th anniversary and they dropped a video that had a timeline from 2022 up to present day. There was the announcement of Takashi Yamazaki's movie, which wound up being Godzilla Minus One. It showed the behind the scenes footage, the release of the movie in Japan (November 3rd, 2023) and then the United States a month later (December 1st, 2023), and the movie winning an Oscar at the Academy Awards in 2024 along with many other awards later that year. It was a long journey from making the movie to becoming such a huge success and director Takashi Yamazaki was thanking everyone for making the film as big as it is. The video was a really cool tribute until we got a little tease that ended with "And then—," which had everyone expecting there is something else coming. And they were right.

At the start of this year's Godzilla-Fest, we were greeted with that same tribute video celebrating that journey. Then, we got the reveal of Takashi Yamazaki's next movie drop with the title card GODZILLA – 0.0 or GODZILLA MINUS ZERO.

This sequel has been talked about ever since Godzilla Minus One won that Oscar in 2024. The director has commented if he were to come back to do one more movie he thought there will be a monster fight, but he was afraid it would lose that grounded and dark tone he captured in his original movie. He also did mention he would like to remake Godzilla vs Hedorah if he were to come back. Whether it is Hedorah or something else, there is no doubt another monster will appear in Godzilla Minus Zero. For what this movie is actually about there is no information, as of this time. There is no plot synopsis or even a cast list that could give some insight on Minus Zero.

What is being reported, however, is Yamazaki and Toho are locking in for a global theatrical release in late 2026 with production ramping up in New Zealand and Norway later this year.

In the meantime, we are back to talking about the logo because the calligraphy of the "G" has changed. Of course, it is just stylistic choice, but much like when the logo for Minus One was revealed in 2022 people are dissecting this logo and what it means. We are giving ourselves a weird Rorschach test. In the logo, a lot of people are seeing a praying girl inside the calligraphy of the letter. If you look at the second slide (picture by BehemothMode on X) the outline shows hair, a girl's face, her hands in a prayer position, and the spine resembling a tail. It sort of reflects Noriko at the end of Minus One when a black cancer appeared on her neck. It was revealed by Yamazaki the black spot is actually Godzilla cells leading to theories about a possible mutation for the character in the sequel. It is unknown if the actress who played Noriko (Minami Hamabe) will return. There has been casting calls for extras, but no cast calls for any major roles.

Others are saying they are seeing Hedorah. On the third slide (picture by DMan1954 on X), he inserted Hedorah's flying form inside the "G" and the eyes inside the two zeroes. I feel this is more of a stretch. We will have to wait and see what this movie is really about.

Overall, I am very excited for next year. I can't wait to see what Yamazaki does with Godzilla Minus Zero. Minus One turned out to be one of my all-time favorite Godzilla movies ever. Since the movie is coming out late-2026 we should see a trailer around June or July.

Godzilla in "Godzilla-Fes: Shibuya Ablaze"
Godzilla in "burning" form in Godzilla-Fes: Shibuya Ablaze

Throughout Godzilla-Fest, we get the usual merchandise reveals and promotions for the Godzilla: Battle Line mobile app and then the short film would be saved for last. This year for Godzilla's 71st anniversary, there was a cross promotion for Burning Godzilla and Millenium Godzilla and the new short film sort of crossed designs. When Toho makes these shorts it is to really preserve and pay tribute to the "man-in-suit" style of filming.

As for the short film itself, Godzilla-Fes: Shibuya Ablaze, I thought it was pretty cool in terms of how the film was shot. The film was mostly one long continuous shot of just Godzilla attacking the military. Through out the film, the military and the news broadcast are reporting about Godzilla's body temperature is constantly rising above 500 degrees Celsius and then he transforms into his "burning" form just to attack a military helicopter. It could be a little underwhelming because there is no monster fights. I thought it was cute when he got to the Godzilla hotel, he just looks at it and acknowledges the statue as one if his own. He is trying to say hi to it before being attacked by the helicopters again.

Then, we get a tease of Godzilla's next opponent in next year's short film, which nobody really has a clue what it could be. There is a vague silhouette of a large body and tendrils which has people thinking it could be Biollante. Yet, the monster's chirps and cries doesn't exactly match. Unless Toho decided to update a previous monster, we could be looking at an entirely new monster for next year's short film.

With the excitement around Godzilla Minus Zero and the secrecy surrounding the mystery monster in the short film we have quite a lot to look forward in 2026. By the time we get the trailer for Minus Zero, time will really fly by with the movie's release, next year's Godzilla-Fest, and then the Monsterverse stuff won't be too far behind once we get to 2027.
