Rumor: Latest "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova" Test Screening Suggests A More Serious Film

The MonsterVerse may be changing course again.

A new round of rumors surrounding Godzilla x Kong: Supernova claims that an early test screening was received very positively, with perhaps the most interesting detail being that director Grant Sputore's film reportedly takes a more serious approach than Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

Even more intriguing, people who reportedly saw the film have compared its tone to a mixture of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong.

If true, that could be exactly the tonal adjustment the MonsterVerse needs.

Test Screening Reportedly Went Very Well

The latest information comes from Godzilla YouTuber D Man1954, who claims to personally know three people who attended a test screening for Supernova back in February. According to his sources, all three enjoyed the unfinished version of the film.

The general reaction in the theater was reportedly that Supernova was an improvement over The New Empire, with some apparently feeling it could even surpass Godzilla vs. Kong.

However, there are a couple of very important disclaimers here.

These are secondhand accounts rather than reactions posted directly by audience members, and the screening reportedly took place in February. Test screenings generally use unfinished cuts, meaning editing, visual effects, music and even entire scenes can change before release.

Neither Legendary nor Warner Bros. has confirmed these reactions.

Still, the most interesting part of the report isn't necessarily whether Supernova is "better" than the previous movies. It's what the sources are saying about its tone.

King of the Monsters Meets Godzilla vs. Kong?

According to the report, all three sources independently compared Supernova to a blend of Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong in terms of tone and style, rather than plot.

The film is supposedly a little more serious than The New Empire, with higher stakes and a MonsterVerse world that feels larger and more developed.

That comparison immediately caught my attention.

King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong occupy an interesting middle ground within the MonsterVerse. King of the Monsters embraced enormous spectacle and fantastical mythology while generally treating its Titans with a sense of awe and seriousness. Godzilla vs. Kong pushed the franchise further into science-fiction territory but still maintained enough dramatic weight, particularly through Kong and Jia, to keep the story grounded.

The New Empire, meanwhile, went much further into colorful, exaggerated monster action and comedy.

There's nothing inherently wrong with that approach. The MonsterVerse has always changed its personality from movie to movie. However, there is a point where increasingly trying to top the insanity of the previous installment risks turning the Titans themselves into little more than giant action figures.

A combination of King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong could potentially offer a better balance.

Give us the mythology, scale and apocalyptic atmosphere of King of the Monsters, combine it with the faster pacing and monster characterization of Godzilla vs. Kong, and there is a potentially excellent MonsterVerse movie hiding somewhere in the middle.

And Supernova may need that seriousness considering what apparently threatens the planet this time.

A New Synopsis Teases Mysterious Signals

Adding another piece to the puzzle is a new plot synopsis that recently appeared on the German theater website Kinorama Unna.

Following the events of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, the world is shaken once again: A deep, rhythmic signal appears in various regions, seemingly emanating from places long considered legendary. As the first clues emerge, Godzilla and Kong find themselves in a perilous situation. Their powers pull them in different directions, but it soon becomes clear that the signal is not only awakening titans but also disrupting a larger order.

While Godzilla follows the clues in nature and Kong searches for answers in the ruins, teams of scientists and field researchers attempt to decipher the signal's origin.

That last detail could be particularly significant.

The synopsis should be treated cautiously. Although it appeared on a legitimate German cinema website, it has not been released or confirmed by Legendary or Warner Bros. as an official synopsis. Until the studio releases its own description, this should be regarded as another potentially revealing—but unverified—piece of information.

Nevertheless, it fits surprisingly well with what we have been hearing about Supernova.

Another Titan Awakening?

The idea of a mysterious signal awakening Titans immediately brings King of the Monsters to mind.

In that film, King Ghidorah's Alpha call awakened Titans around the world, resulting in a global Titan uprising. If Supernova is indeed tonally reminiscent of King of the Monsters, the new signal could provide a similar scenario without simply repeating Ghidorah's role.

The difference may be scale.

The synopsis suggests that this disturbance is affecting a larger "order," potentially implying that the Titan ecosystem, or perhaps something even greater, is being disrupted.

That would also fit the test-screening rumor that Supernova feels more expansive and has higher stakes than The New Empire.

The question becomes: Who or what is sending the signal?

Considering everything else we currently know about Supernova, there is one extremely obvious suspect.

SpaceGodzilla.

SpaceGodzilla's involvement in the film has been one of Hollywood's worst-kept kaiju secrets. The character was previously referenced in Writers Guild information connected to the production, and subsequent merchandise leaks have further pointed toward the cosmic Godzilla doppelgänger appearing in the movie.

If this mysterious signal is connected to SpaceGodzilla, it could provide the MonsterVerse with a way of making his arrival feel much larger than simply having another powerful Titan show up for Godzilla and Kong to fight.

Perhaps his presence is disrupting the Titan hierarchy itself.

Or perhaps the signal is announcing something coming from beyond Earth.

For now, that's speculation.

The MonsterVerse Doesn't Need to Become Grim Again

A "more serious" Supernova doesn't necessarily mean the MonsterVerse needs to return completely to the grounded approach of Godzilla (2014).

At this stage, that would probably be impossible.

The MonsterVerse now contains Hollow Earth civilizations, anti-gravity technology, giant mechanical gauntlets, psychic connections with Titans and creatures from outer space. Trying to pretend this universe is still the relatively grounded world introduced by Gareth Edwards would be fighting against more than a decade of worldbuilding.

But serious and realistic are not the same thing.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters had an extraterrestrial three-headed dragon battling Godzilla in Boston while Mothra fought Rodan in the sky. It was completely fantastical, yet Michael Dougherty generally presented those creatures as gods rather than punchlines.

That's the distinction I hope Supernova understands.

The MonsterVerse can be ridiculous.

It can be colorful.

It can have Godzilla and Kong beating the hell out of a giant monster from outer space.

But the characters within that world should still believe what is happening matters.

If Sputore has found a way to combine the mythological grandeur of King of the Monsters with the accessibility, monster characterization and action of Godzilla vs. Kong, then Supernova could offer the best of both worlds.

Could Supernova Find the MonsterVerse's Sweet Spot?

Obviously, test screenings are not guarantees.

Movies change substantially during post-production, and positive early reactions have never guaranteed that general audiences or critics will respond the same way. In this particular case, we aren't even hearing directly from the test audience. We're hearing accounts from someone who says he knows people who attended.

So expectations should remain under control.

But taken together, the latest rumors paint an interesting picture.

A more serious tone.

Higher stakes.

A larger and more developed MonsterVerse.

Mysterious signals appearing around the planet.

Titans beginning to awaken.

Godzilla and Kong separately investigating whatever is happening.

And a cosmic threat potentially waiting at the center of it all.

That certainly sounds more like King of the Monsters than The New Empire.

Personally, that's encouraging.

I don't want the MonsterVerse to abandon the wild monster action that has helped keep the franchise alive. Godzilla vs. Kong proved that audiences will happily embrace the crazier side of this universe. But there needs to be something underneath the spectacle.

The monsters should feel enormous. Their arrival should have consequences. And when something powerful enough to threaten Godzilla and Kong appears, the movie should make us believe that the world is genuinely in danger.

If the latest test-screening rumors are accurate, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova may finally be attempting to strike that balance.
