Was SpaceGodzilla Confirmed For "Godzilla x Kong: Supernova" By Accident?

Updated: Jun 20

Every time hype for the movie dies down there is always something to fan the flames. I was hoping the SpaceGodzilla hype would die down until we got the first trailer for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova to get confirmation, but then Matthew Modine might have accidentally confirmed the villain for the film a year ahead of schedule.

Granted the movie is currently in production and anything about the movie is very tight lipped. Trying to get an interview with someone that is on set just to talk about the film is impossible. I have tried and I was told she was not allowed to do interviews until after the film is released. A shame, but it is what it is and I can understand why. It is to control information. There could even be changes during production and the information given could no longer be true anymore. However, that is not stopping the actors to sprinkle some hints here and there.

When Dan Stevens was first announced to return, he posted three emojis (a T-Rex, Earth, and gorilla) along with the line WATCH THIS SPACE. At the time, this was already generating ideas that this movie was going to have a more cosmic theme. The Monsterverse was looking to the stars and we were going to get space monsters. After Alycia Debnam-Carey was announced, she did the same thing posting four emojis on her post. This time, they were twin sisters, a shooting star, a T-Rex, and a phone. Ever since then, SpaceGodzilla was suddenly becoming a sure idea. Some fans are still holding out for other monsters like Gigan or something original. This week, Matthew Modine might have gone far beyond that.

On his Instagram account, he posted three separate images from the 1994 movie Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla. The scene of the fairies warning Emi of the space monster's arrival, a movie poster, and a small clip of Godzilla, Mogeura, and SpaceGodzilla in a heated 2 vs 1 battle. Later that day, he posted an image from an article that announced he signed on for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova with the hashtag #GodzillavsSpaceGodzilla. There is a rule in fandoms that goes along the lines of, "if something is deleted, then it's real." This is not always the case, but after Modine deleted the images and the hashtag it really made fans raise eyebrows even more so.

I am not confirming SpaceGodzilla is the villain of the next movie as, for now, it is all rumor and speculation based on images from one actor. Modine has been posting other Godzilla and King Kong content that nobody seems to recognize. He has shared videos of fan animated videos and a behind the scenes image of the original King Kong showing the giant face that was used for close up shots. He is really trying to connect with fans by showing interest in the genre and showing Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla may have given the wrong idea for the upcoming Monsterverse film. If that is the case, then why did he share those specific images? Why the hashtag with the image of the article? Why didn't he come out and say anything to disclaim the rumors and it was all a mistake?

The only answer I have is that maybe it is best to let the hype fizzle out on its own. Better to not say anything at all rather than try to say something and remove all doubt. Legendary knows that the fans are watching and are watching very closely like vultures circling around a carcass.

If it does turn out to be SpaceGodzilla, then all I want is that this monster was considered as a creative decision and can make him work in the Monsterverse. There has to be some consistency that Legendary is struggling with this series. Stories and lore are all over the place and does not seem like there is actual communication as to what kind of world Legendary is trying to build. I don't want SpaceGodzilla if the only reason is because the fans begged for it. Then, it becomes forced and the movie does not come out as good as it could have been.

I want to know what you guys think. Does this confirm SpaceGodzilla's appearance in Godzilla x Kong: Supernova or do you think this is a misdirect?
