This year marks Godzilla's 68th anniversary and also the 50th anniversary of Godzilla vs Gigan. We learned that there will be an animated short film made by Gemstone called Godzilla vs Gigan Rex, the sequel to their earlier short G vs G. We have even established in my last post that this will be heavily focused on merchandise celebrating Gigan's 50th anniversary and how they will begin next year the one year march to Godzilla's 70th. This morning, some more details about this year's Godzilla-Fest had cropped up on the Godzilla app that has fans more excited than ever.
A teaser video of a new Gigan costume was unveiled. Commissioned in a fundraiser, the new costume's design is a recreation of the Gigan from its debut movie and was built by suit sculptor and special effects technician Shinichi Wakasa. The teaser begins slowly crawling from the bottom and then we see a close up of the hook claws and the buzzsaw on the monster's chest. Then, the teaser pans up showing off the rest of the costume and cuts to a title card dubbed "GODZILLA FEST 3 ATTACK ON GIGAN!" This is where we learn of the title of the new short film that was later revealed in a first look photo.
In this photo, we see Gigan and Final Wars Godzilla about to face off in the night time and they look ready to destroy some miniature buildings. This will be the second time the Godzilla suit from Godzilla: Final Wars will make an appearance in a short film. Last year, we got to see both this Godzilla and Hedorah (also using the Final Wars design) clash at a refinery. A battle that was surely missed out on in the 2004 film as it was swiftly killed off along side Ebirah by Godzilla's atomic breath.
According to the set schedule for Godzilla-Fest, the Gigan costume will make its debut right after the event opens. The "Gigan Suit Launch Project" was the fundraiser that was held from April to May to support raise enough money to reconstruct the original suit, which rotted and decayed over time and Mr. Wakasa will be sitting down to talk about the suit. After the reveal, Gigan will be going around doing initial suit greetings with other characters such as Chibi Godzilla and Final Wars Godzilla. We get the premier of Godzilla vs Gigan Rex after the first suit greeting and the second short Attack On Gigan! will premier at the event's climax.
With all of this, I think we are set for an event that goes a little bigger than last year. Two short films is definitely going a little bigger and it is very curious to me if perhaps an S.H. MonsterArts Gigan will be revealed here just like how a figure for Hedorah was revealed last year. Either way, I am excited to see how both short films will turn out in the end. I just hope Toho doesn't pull them down a month later like they did with last year's short.
