Just today, Toho Co. unveiled a new Godzilla anime that has people scratching heads. The untitled anime is being produced by studio Orange (Godzilla Singular Point and BEASTARS) and Thai animation studio IGLOO STUDIO (My Daemon). The anime was unveiled at a stage event in Anime Festival Asia Singapore 2025 and is currently in production. No release date is confirmed at this time. The only plot details we have, for now, is about a boy who is possessed by Godzilla's power, which has fans really unsure about this new direction for the character.
Back in Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Minus One, there were these teases at the climax of the movies of either Godzilla turning humanoid or a human character in the beginning stages of possibly turning into another Godzilla. This has intrigued fans as a concept that would push the franchise even closer to the horror genre. A grotesque form of Godzilla on film really had fans gushing over. Now, it looks like Toho Co. is presenting this idea further in a more safer way to market the idea: a shonen anime.

Shonen anime are shows typically targeted for young boys that often explores themes of friendship, perseverance, and adventure. Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, My Hero Academia, and Demon Slayer are all examples of shonen anime. From what we can gather based on other shonen anime is how we can speculate the anime will go. Boy who is a nobody wants to be recognized by his peers, gets powers accidentally or through training, suddenly boy goes from a nobody to becoming the most powerful human in the show. It is a power-fantasy anime with Godzilla as the gimmick this time. So it is no wonder expectations from fans are low and uncertain.
Seeing this is in collaboration between Orange and IGLOO STUDIO, this shonen anime is also a safe way to push into the globalization market that Toho Co. has planned. Back in May 2025, Toho Co. posted a video advertising Godzilla in Southeast Asia.
On top of that, shonen anime are the most popular kind anime that still sells merchandise. Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto, Attack on Titan, Full Metal Alchemist, Bleach, Death Note, My Hero Academia, Demon Slayer, and Kaiju No. 8 are all examples of the most popular shonen anime that still get merchandise to this day no matter if the shows are still running or has ended.
Regardless of uncertainty from fans, the idea for this anime is all new territory. I think it will be fine as long as Godzilla is in the anime doing stuff and not just a boy who has Godzilla's powers. The idea is to sell the character to a global audience and recognize what Godzilla is really about.
