Around this time last year images of the toys for Godzilla: King Of The Monsters made their way on the internet spoiling the confirmation of Burning Godzilla. At the time I did not see it as a big spoiler as there was no way of knowing at the time of Burning Godzilla’s role, but everybody called it as it did play a big role in the climax of the film. Fast forward to a couple nights ago and we are at the same situation where images of the toys for Godzilla vs Kong have made the rounds online. This time though this line up has an even bigger spoiler than Burning Godzilla and I feel conflicted in so many ways.
I am going to try to talk about this spoiler without spoiling it and showing none of the pictures. There are a lot of you that already know what I am talking about and I recommend that you don't spoil it in the comments section. If you do I will silence you. You have been warned. For those that don’t know it is better to not know until the movie comes out. If you didn't know before, but figured it out while reading this post then I apologize in advance and I did not mean to spoil it for you.
This big spoiler has to do with a certain character that has been rumored for a very long time. Longer than Godzilla: King Of The Monsters. Now, it is unofficially confirmed that this character will be in Godzilla vs Kong and I want to give my thoughts on the character.
To start positively, I am excited for this character. I am excited that it will be on the big screen fighting Godzilla and Kong. My inner fan is screaming, “bring everyone into this! Make this as off the wall as it can!” And because it’s in the movie and if the movie succeeds then all bets are off on other possibilities of other monsters that can come in future Monsterverse films (if that happens). I do like this character because it’s a classic villain, it is very powerful, and it has become a huge staple in the Godzilla series.
On the other hand, I am afraid because of how off the wall this could go with this certain character and how the general audience may perceive the film overall. When Godzilla (2014) was released, the movie grounded the Monsterverse as a realistic take on what would happen if Godzilla was a real creature and that same kind of realism was passed on to Kong: Skull Island. Then Godzilla: King Of The Monsters came and any sense of realism was thrown out the window. In my eyes, Godzilla: King Of The Monsters was WAY better than Godzilla (2014), but to the general audience it was a glitter covered turd served on a silver platter. Nothing connected with the general audience what-so-ever. I can't predict if the general audience will like it or not. I honestly can't say because the general audience is unpredictable and that is what makes me nervous. You can argue why they won't like it or they will like it. In the end, we won't really know until the movie comes out. That is the only way we can tell.
So where did the images come from and why was it leaked online so early? The answer comes from an event in China that was happening earlier in the week. This event was a Toy Fair, which is where big brand toy companies display the toys they're working to put on store shelves. The booth these toys came from a Hong-Kong based toy company called Playmates, which announced in August they would handle the merchandising for Godzilla vs Kong and any other Godzilla related products. In December, people started to notice that Playmates have already released some of those figures some looking like bootlegs of other previously released toys. Considering that the movie was originally set for March, Playmates went through the trouble of making the toys and have them ready to go. Then in November, here is this announcement that Godzilla vs Kong is pushed back to November 20th, 2020. So it became a conflict of scheduling, yet it is unknown if Playmates got the memo for the movie's push back or not. Since the images of the toys for Godzilla vs Kong has been spreading, Warner Bros. went to social media like Twitter and Instagram and passed out copyright strikes to everybody that posted the images. This was not meant to be shown off online and now many have already seen it.
As you can see, this is why I feel conflicted in many ways. I do like this character and I am excited to see it on the big screen to fight this version of Godzilla. It is a shame that it was spoiled for a lot of people. Yet, this makes me more worried of how the general audience may react to it based it’s a very odd character and not realistic at all. I am on the fence on the design and need to see more of it in action before giving my judgement. All I really want is for Godzilla vs Kong to succeed and I am going to keep praying that it does.
Again a warning to those that know, I will silence anybody that says the name or give any sort detail of the character in the comments. Please don’t spoil it for anyone that does not know which character I am talking about. Instead, let’s keep it a surprise for as long as we can.
