SpaceGodzilla CONFIRMED For The Monsterverse! Villain Accidentally Revealed By WGA

ree

The idea of SpaceGodzilla entering the Monsterverse has been a long time coming. Early fuel for the speculation came from a piece of concept art in the Godzilla vs. Kong art book showing a Godzilla-like flying monster—though that design never directly matched the classic SpaceGodzilla we know from Toho. Fan interest continued to grow over the years, especially since SpaceGodzilla’s crystalline powers and extraterrestrial origin would make for an exciting, larger-than-life threat.

More recently, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova actor Matthew Modine stirred the rumor mill by reposting images related to Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla on his social media with the hashtag #GodzillaxKongSupernova, though he quickly took the posts down. Fans captured screenshots before they were deleted, which only added to speculation.

Now, a listing on the Writers Guild of America directory for Godzilla x Kong: Supernova credited the project as being “based on the characters Godzilla and Space Godzilla owned and created by Toho Co., Ltd.” — a strong indicator that SpaceGodzilla has officially been licensed for and will appear in the upcoming Monsterverse film.

This update on the WGA website is the closest to getting an official confirmation without toy leaks or a movie trailer. There was some expectation that perhaps Legendary Entertainment would just make a new monster similar to SpaceGodzilla so they wouldn't have to pay for the license and use the monster any time they want in future projects.

Apparently, based on word of mouth, Toho Co. is uncomfortable with Godzilla being treated as a replaceable species in the Monsterverse, since it could risk diluting the monster's symbolic weight. While there is no confirmed retcon stating Godzilla is the only member of his kind, Toho's licensing guidelines and brand protection likely discourages the creation of monsters that are too visually or conceptually similar to Godzilla.

From that perspective, Legendary choosing to license SpaceGodzilla makes practical sense. Creating an original Titan that closely resembled Godzilla, especially one with comparable powers or silhouette, could risk diluting the brand or inviting unfavorable comparisons. SpaceGodzilla, on the other hand, is a Toho creation already established within Godzilla's mythos while avoiding those issues.

The reasoning remains speculative, but it offers one possible explanation for why Legendary may have opted to bring in an existing Toho kaiju rather than invent a Godzilla-like original.

Whatever the reasons may be, fan reception has been mixed, ranging from excitement to uneasiness. SpaceGodzilla does not carry the same reputation as some of Toho’s more celebrated kaiju, largely because the only film in which he has appeared, Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994), has often been criticized as rushed and creatively uneven.

That film itself was something of a stopgap release, produced to fill the theatrical slot originally intended for TriStar’s GODZILLA. Over time, however, SpaceGodzilla has developed a following through frequent appearances in video games and comics. These portrayals helped elevate the character beyond his divisive film debut and kept him in the public consciousness.

Still, skepticism remains. While the Monsterverse has increasingly leaned into heightened fantasy and sci-fi elements since Godzilla: King of the Monsters, SpaceGodzilla's original origin, being born from Godzilla's cells inside a black hole, has long been viewed as a stretch even by kaiju standards. That backstory has never fully shaken its reputation as one of the franchise's more outlandish ideas, and how Godzilla x Kong: Supernova chooses to reinterpret or recontextualize it will likely determine whether SpaceGodzilla resonates with modern audiences or reopens old criticisms.
