Ever since The Cloverfield Paradox, there was a heavy feeling that the series was dead in the water. Today, I was proven wrong. According to The Hollywood Report, the Cloverfield series continues in a new sequel that is in the works and the script will be penned by The Batman TV spinoff showrunner, Joe Barton. J.J. Abrams will be producing, but Matt Reeves will not be involved.
I am completely open to another Cloverfield movie. I liked Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane, but The Cloverfield Paradox left a really bad taste that still lingers today. It was a movie that should have never been made to begin with. When I look back at Underwater, a monster movie made by 20th Century Fox, it was definitely telling that there were a lot of elements taken from the Cloverfield viral marketing. No matter how much the director denies it, Underwater was basically a Cloverfield movie with mermaids and Cthulhu and it was pretty darn good. The movie made me wish that it was a sequel to Cloverfield.
I understand that this series is J.J.'s project, but I do not have a whole lot of faith in this producer. After having watched The Cloverfield Paradox back in 2018 and reading that he walked out during post-production to work on Star Wars, I have a feeling that J.J. just did not have any interest in making more Cloverfield movies. I'm guessing that he has to rely on Cloverfield now after how bad the Star Wars sequel movies were. If that is the case that he had to fall back to Cloverfield, then I do not have any hopes for the next Cloverfield movie to be any good. I would rather have someone else other than J.J. Abrams that would be interested in continuing the series.
I am remembering that one time when J.J. said that Cloverfield will be America's very own Godzilla. Well, here is my response to that. America does have their own Godzilla, his name IS Godzilla, and he is going to be fighting Kong on March 31 in theaters and on HBO Max.
