I hope everyone is having a good Sunday because I got some news regarding the Monsterverse series. This morning, it was revealed from online magazine Production Weekly had uploaded their most recent issue on Thursday, March 24 giving details on upcoming projects that are about to go into production. In this issue, we get a little more details about the Apple TV show and the next Monsterverse film.
To start off, the official title for the Apple TV show was revealed and will be called MONARCH. It was originally planned to start production in May, but now the status for production shows that the beginning of filming the show has been delayed to July 6 and will end filming on December 19.
The shows synopsis reads as followed:
"An original live-action series from Legendary's Monsterverse franchise. Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Fransisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family's journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secret organization known as Monarch."
When the show was first announced, it was under the working title "HOUR GLASS" and some information about the show's characters were leaked online. We are still waiting for official confirmation on the details of the cast and characters.
As for the new untitled Monsterverse movie, Production Weekly has confirmed that Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard will be returning to direct the movie. There are no production dates nor a synopsis, but there is one intriguing bit of info that is found on the last line in parentheses. It reads, "Filming is expected to kick off at locations across the Gold Coast and the south-east later this year. | aka "SON OF KONG"."
It is currently unknown if "SON OF KONG" is the movie's actual title or if this will be the working title. Currently, it is still being referred to as "UNTITLED GODZILLA VS KONG SEQUEL." The news about a "SON OF KONG" movie is not something entirely new, but was swept under the rug as a mere rumor, at the time. Back in April 2021, The Hollywood Reporter had reported an exclusive piece about Adam Wingard being in talks to direct the next Monsterverse film and that one of the titles being floated around was "SON OF KONG." The Hollywood Reporter has even said that Legendary is quietly taking steps to stretch the series into one or more installments.
Fans are excited with the Monsterverse continuing with a Godzilla TV show, but not too keen on the idea of a baby Kong coming to the big screen. I am all open for a "SON OF KONG" film as long as there is a good story in place and great visual effects for the monster battles. When it comes to MONARCH, this show will definitely be a series heavily focused on the human characters. I pray that there is a perfect balance between the humans and the monsters (if any of them do appear). Hopefully, Legendary has a plan that will tie all of the movies, shows, and graphic novels together for an epic phase 2 of this series' life-cycle.
